9th Anniversary, on our way up the coast…The animals were great and the night even better! It was hot when we arrived (4:00 P.M.) so we asked for a fan. However, the night was so cool, the fan was off and the electric blanket was full force. We sat on the deck at night with all lights off. We say stars, shooting stars and even one light that moved across the entire sky…changing course multiple times. What was it? It was to the left of the deck at about 45 degrees in the sky. The night and morning were terrific with animal/bird sounds throughout. We especially enjoyed the sunrise deck breakfast delivery. We enjoyed the stay and are now getting heading to the jeep safari. On July 21 we arrived and had a fun dinner where we met the others and celebrated Maxim’s 13th birthday. The staff and visitors were fun and entertaining with help from the animals. Jack and Vicki slept in the bed with Robert, our 9 month old baby of the family, and Dominic and I slept well with futons as beds. In the morning we went on the hike which is a must and on arrival back at the tent, we were surprised to find a tasty breakfast. The safari was wonderful and the experience will stay in our heads for the rest of our lives! P.S. After a very long drive from Berkeley, in the bright sun, warm weather and getting lost on Franz Valley School Road, we finally arrived…yeah!…to a wonderful place. It’s so nice to be amongst peace and quiet. No trucks! The velcro window shades are somewhat of a challenge. (What a wonderful invention.) A passing thought on my completed thesis. All those months, stress, suffering to find the right resources…okay so my topic was on voicemail, but here I’m glad there is no telephone, no voice mail…oh so quiet… no TV, no radio. There are so many things in our lives as distracters. There never seems to be any time for inner peace. Dinner was wonderful. Grilled chicken seasoned to perfection. Flowing glass of wine. The late evening walk to watch the catfish feed. I’ve never seen anything like it…and we didn’t stumble in the darkness walking back to the cabin. The evening was pleasant…lots of animals sounds to rock you to sleep. No alarm clock…just nature. It’s so beautiful in the hills. Breakfast was delightful. Fresh fruit, yogurt, cake and coffee. (We’re tea drinkers..oh well, life isn’t perfect.) If you do anything during your stay…you must go on tour. It’s a fascinating narrative story on all of the animals, their origin, personalities, feeding choice, etc. Then after your jeep ride, you walk around the camp grounds inside the fences for a total different experience. (Close encounters of a different kind). By now you should have quite a bit of pictures and background history on the animals. It’s time to relax, shower, and visit the local town of Calistoga. Only eight miles away. I’ve decided not share this wonderful experience with anyone else! I’ll keep it in my memories…I’ll remember the beauty and all the magnificent creations that God has provided on the planet. Thanks be to God. Berkeley, California Guests

First of all, I must admit, we had something totally different in mind when we decided to come up to the wine country for the weekend. Somehow, it seems, we ended up here. I can’t begin to tell you how happy we are that we did! I can’t begin to tell you how happy we are that we did. This has been a wonderful experience. Nancy and Peter are very nice (and Peter is a BBQ God!) The staff is very friendly. The animals are fascinating. We enjoyed the quiet and the soothings sounds of the animals. We met a lot of very interesting people at dinner…that was fun! The tent is great! It was a very different and unique lodging experience, although it was quite cold at night. The heater and electric blanket saved us. The bed is so comfortable…we want to take it home! We will recommend Safari to everyone we know….it’s a great place. This visit has been a very special surprise for me. Today is our 16th Wedding Anniversary. I love being ‘kidnapped’ away to experience something new and different. Safari West certainly is new and different. It is now almost seven A.M. The air is cool and crisp and very clear. Last night, the stars were brilliant when we walked back to our cozy tent cabin. It is not often that a person’s vacation matches his passion. But, when it does…the result is excellent. Nancy and Peter are obviously passionately in love with their work and their home! This preserve is so beautiful and the attitude and philosophy so noble…that are sure that even wild animals must feel secure. We have truly enjoyed our visit. What a neat place and I never knew you could plumb a tent. To our surprise, we were given the adventure here by our good friends for my husband’s 30th birthday! We decided to bring his mother with us to share in the adventure. The property is beautiful…the animals are spectacular…the jeep ride is adventerious and the cranes a re hilarious!! This is a truly a unique and exquisite place to stay. What more could you ask for in a camp type adventure? What a great birthday surprise for my fiancée Gabriel…and a bonus for me to get to enjoy the accommodations. To complete your stay, we highly recommend you enjoy your meals here, grab a good bottle of wine and relax. The staff is wonderful...how many places can you become on a first name basis in a few days. (Including the animals). Last but certainly not least, take the safari tour....it is very educational and brings you as close to Africa without having to travel there! Helful hints: 1.Take a shower before bed…it’s freezing in the am. 2. As warm as you may be when you go to bed, turn the blanket. 3. Close the windows at least to half way at night or it will be damp inside. 4. If the animal noises are hard to sleep with, turn your fan on low and it will drown it out a little…but it takes away for the experience.
Our family had a wonderful time here…we enjoyed the animals, the grounds, the cabins, the food, the dining tent, and all the staff. The sounds in the night reminded us of being in Africa, though we were grateful not to hear the leopards in the night! We would like to have gone for another jeep ride in the A.M. to see the animals during a cooler part of the day. Thanks for a memorable experience. We’ll be back with family and friends! What a great escape…feel world’s away. Spent the time reading, napping, picnicking, and enjoying the animals. Did this as a surprise birthday present for Benoit on his 35th birthday. Did the 'safari' yesterday…was good, but crowded. Hope they can strike a healthy balance between having a safe and healthy place for animals, make money to care for the animals, yet still keep it a peaceful retreat for humans. They are doing a great thing here for kids, people who don’t have the opportunity to learn about animals that are quickly becoming extinct from habitat destruction etc. Would definitely recommend to friends!
